Have you ever noticed that some people are just drawn to quotes?
I fall into that category. I love quotes. My family has always been active readers. So perhaps that is where my love of quotes came from. In any case, a good quote can put a smile on my face. I am one of those people who buys the quote magnets, likes wall art involving quotes, and keeps my favorite quotes in my own "quote book" of sorts. I consider a work in progress. I add to the book as I feel inspired. I make sure to put the date of entry. I am curious to see the not only the progression of the quotes but also how long it takes me to fill up the book. I think I have been gathering quotes since 2006.
In my estimation, there is an innate elegance in a well-written/well-spoken quotation. For me, there is beauty in language that cannot be conveyed in any other manner. Language can convey most any emotion--happiness, joy, amusement, sadness, anger, fear, enthusiasm, excitement, etc. As such, quotes can convey those same sentiments. I have elected to share some of my favorite quotes with you.
Please feel free to share your favorites. I am always looking for new additions.
"Adventure is a path. Real adventure--self-determined, self-motivated, often risky--forces you to have a firsthand encounter with the world. The world is the way it is, not the way you imagine it. Your body will collide with earth and you will bear witness. In this way you will be compelled to grapple with the limitless kindness and bottomless cruelty of humankind--and perhaps realize that you yourself are capable of both. This will change you. Nothing will ever be black-and-white." --Mark Jenkins
"Be happy for this moment. This moment is your life." --Omar Khayyam
"One's destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things." -- Henry Miller
"Life is a daring adventure or nothing at all." --Helen Keller
"God gave us memory so that we might have roses in December." -- James M. Barrie
"Though we travel the world over to find the beautiful, we must carry it with us or we find it not." --Ralph Waldo Emerson
"Everytime you smile at someone, it is an action of love, a gift to that person, a beautiful thing." --Mother Teresa
"How wonderful it is that nobody need wait a single minute before starting to change the world." -- Anne Frank
"Be glad of life because it gives you a chance to love and to work and to play and to look up at the stars." --Henry Van Dyke
"From the first moment a woman dared to speak that hope -- dared to believe that the American Dream was meant for her too -- ordinary women have taken on extraordinary odds to give their daughters the chance for something else; for a life more equal, more free, and filled with more opportunity than they ever had. In so many ways we have succeeded, but in so many areas we have much work left to do."

My two favorite quotes:
ReplyDelete"Success: To laugh often and much, to win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children, to earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends, to appreciate beauty, to find the best in others, to leave the world a bit better, whether by a healthy child, a garden patch, or a redeemed social condition; to know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded!" ~Ralph Waldo Emerson
AND
"Outside of a dog, a book is a man's best friend. Inside of a dog it's too dark to read." -Groucho Marx
I am not familiar with either of those, but I like both!
ReplyDeleteI have always loved one by Marianne Williamson (sometimes wrongly attributed to Nelson Mandela): “Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure. It is our light, not our darkness that most frightens us. We ask ourselves, Who am I to be brilliant, gorgeous, talented, fabulous? Actually, who are you not to be? You are a child of God. Your playing small does not serve the world. There is nothing enlightened about shrinking so that other people won't feel insecure around you. We are all meant to shine, as children do. We were born to make manifest the glory of God that is within us. It's not just in some of us; it's in everyone. And as we let our own light shine, we unconsciously give other people permission to do the same. As we are liberated from our own fear, our presence automatically liberates others.”
